GHOST PINES
GHOST PINES
Morning fog weaves between pine needles, firs, and cedar trees. As the morning sun burns it away, lavender and vetiver root themselves. Ethereal and majestic for eternity.

Early morning dew collected on the foliage of the Blue Ridge Mountain trees,
as a chilled wind gently urged the droplets to fall from their heights onto the moss and ferns below. In the distance, the golden strands of dawn reflected off the fog that tendrilled through the boughs of forest giants like pines and stout firs, as if the night was softening its clutch. Birds began their morning song, twigs cracked under the creatures that stirred in the light of daybreak, mountain laurel brushed against the flank of a passing doe seeking a cold stream. It was here I knew I’d be most likely to find you; in the untouched and ancient wilds, in the sounds completely void of human intervention, in the sheltering shroud of fog, in the smell of sweet mountain air. You always escaped here when you existed in the waking world, why wouldn’t you call this home in the afterlife? If I listened intently, the distant woodpecker might resemble your laughter.
In loving memory of M. Deirdre Duncan.
