She was a stunning beauty,
a face and form so illustrious and mesmerizing to all men that saw her and all that wished to see. The fame of her allure spread far enough to reach the ears of Venus, the goddess of love and desire. It flooded her with the hot embers of envy and rage; her worshippers dared to abandon her for a mere mortal named Psyche.
She decided to send her son, Eros, a winged god of love and passion armed with a bow and arrow, to use his weapon to force Psyche to fall in love with a horrific beast. He flew to Psyche, ready to carry out his mother's wishes and return mankind's devotion to his mother. Eros discovered Psyche sleeping, and as he drew an arrow from its quiver to pierce her heart and send her fervorously into the arms of a beast that would destroy her, he accidentally pricked his own finger. Eros dropped the arrow, utterly spellbound by his own doing, and fell in love with Psyche. Deserting his mother's mission, he flew away, vowing to himself to never bring her harm.
